Squirrel!

My mantra used to be "There's never enough time." And I wondered why I suffered from hypertension until I heard Dr. Deepak Chopra speak who said,
"The fastest way to a heart attack is thinking there's never enough time."
No, Duh! The lightbulb went off. Yet, I love ideas, I love the potentiality in all things, I love action. I love creating new thoughts, ideas and opportunities.

The problem lies in the execution.  It's easy to get distracted like the cartoon dog...squirrel!

For some reason, this is especially true for the things I love the most as well as for self care. We've been conditioned with our "to do lists" and culture to do what we "should do" or "need to do" first. We applaud hard work and our "no pain, no gain" mentality.  We often idolize the martyr and self-sacrificing.

I'm going to be sacrilegious and suggest that we have this ass backwards.

Personally speaking, when I get up and do my yoga and self care first then the rest of the day moves more freely. My thoughts flow. My writing is more authentic and comes with ease. I'm more stable and more present with my clients, family and friends. I work from a sense of strength and fullness, rather than one of fear and lack or resentment.

Self-care and self-love is the most loving gift you can give to your family, friends, and business.

To serve my clients, I must first serve myself. My job has become self-care. It's fun, it's energizing, and gratifying.

I used to be very judgemental about "selfish people."  This was my shadow side. The side of me I denied. I was so busy caring for others that I became selfless. When I went through my first coaching program and my coach asked me what I did for fun....I cried. I didn't really do anything for fun. I was so busy working the only thing I did for myself was sweat in 110 degree room doing Bikram yoga. This fed my "Pitta fire" and I felt better afterwards...well sometimes. Until I didn't. Then I knew it was time for change.

So how to improve execution for what is really important?
  1. First, take enough time for self, for contemplation, to get out of your head and into your heart and soul to discover your priorities. Schedule in vacations, before other priorities takeover.
  2. Second, practice tools of focus. Commit to small steps toward bigger goals. Complete each step before moving on to the next. Resist chasing every squirrel. ( I know, but they are so much fun!)
  3. Get support. Acknowledge your strengths and hire someone to help you with the rest.
Here's to your best year ever!

With Love & Gratitude,

Lisa

Guest Blogger-Vincent Renner of Tasty 6 Love the Beets!

This week I invited the founder of Tasty 6 to our nutrition support group to give us a tasting and am so impressed with his company that we have included a refrigerator of his USDA Certified, FDA approved raw fresh juices for our patients. I also asked him to write a blog on some of the benefits. I've been drinking his beet juice to keep my BP down and was not aware of the studies showing cytotoxic effects for breast and prostate cancers while protecting healthy tissues from chemotherapy. Yes, LOVE the Beets! Here's what else Vincent has to say (read to the end for a special offer):

Feel the Beets – Become a Staminator
Amazing Benefits of Raw Beet Juice

While the initial reaction I get from people who try our beet juice STAMINATOR is that they either love or hate Beets, the scientifically researched health benefits are truly amazing. And hence make it important that we all try to show the Beets some LOVE! And while many love it and for others yet it is an acquired taste, it is a further amazing how speedy and easy it is to unlock the benefits once you integrate beets into your diet.

It has only been in recent decades that scientific research has focused on the health benefits of BEETS as a “functional food”, and the benefits are mindboggling (1), (2), (3):
·      Improves blood flow, increases stamina and balances oxygen;
·      Very high in antioxidants and nitrates;
·      Good for cardiovascular health, as it lowers blood pressure significantly and manages hypertension;
·      Lowers oxidative stress and inflammation;

Significantly improves Blood Flow – increased Stamina, allows for better use of Oxygen, improves Brain functioning and reduces Blood Pressure
Beets contain high amounts of nitrates, a compound which improves blood flow throughout the whole body, including muscles, the heart and brain. It has been shown that “…dietary nitrate may be useful in improving regional brain [blood delivery] in older adults in critical brain areas known to be involved in executive functioning” (6).

Increasing nitric oxide in the blood vessels allows blood vessels to open up further and thereby enhances uptake of oxygen. Beet juice “…improves muscle efficiency and endurance exercise” and “…improves performance during intense intermittent exercise” (3), and also “… beetroot juice supplementation [is] associated with a significant reduction in systolic Blood Pressure” (2),

Beet Juice as a high source of Antioxidants and Anti-Inflammatory Agents
Beetroot is a rich source of “phytochemical compounds, that includes ascorbic acid, carotenoids, phenolic acids and flavonoids”(1), and one of the few sources of the betalains, which are strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities and are being investigated for “…helping with reduction in oxidative stress, chronic inflammation such as liver disease and arthritis and cancer (4)(5)”.

Just 5 oz of Raw Beet Juice a day needed to get the necessary benefits
Research shows that with just 3 to 5 oz of Raw Beet Juice not large quantities are needed to obtain the beneficial effects to beetroots, but rather 3 to 5 oz of raw beet root juice a day (7).
While often it is best to eat the whole fruit or vegetable to get all the nutrients and fiber, beets when cooked or fermented may loose some of the vitamins and anti-oxidants. Drinking raw beet juice may allow for maximum nutrient availability and easy absorption.

Are There Any Side Effects to Drinking Beet Juice?
People who have naturally low blood pressure should use caution when drinking beet juice, as it may lead to an unsafe drop in blood pressure and make them feel lightheaded (7).  Also, the red betalain pigmentation of beet juice color your urine and bowel movement red, which is harmless.

The nitrates found in Beets are naturally occurring and convert to safe nitrites in your body, and have nothing to do with the unhealthy nitrites used in preserving meats.

Conclusion:  LOVE the BEETS – be a STAMINATOR
Raw Beet Juice is a useful and very healthy addition to your diet and for a healthy lifestyle. Tasty6 offers a powerful Raw Beet Juice, called STAMINATOR [https://tasty6.com/products/staminator-beets-supreme ]. It was designed to bring close to 7 oz of raw Red Beet juice, plus the power of Italian Parsley, Cucumber, Lemon and Apple and Himalayan Salt.

Join US from Wanderlust to Love Your Body Day this Sunday.

This past weekend I had the privilege of attending Wanderlust, a 3 day yoga retreat with my daughter Dana. Words cannot adequately express what this time means to me. It is so important to make time to connect with yourself and your loved ones if you want to better serve and feel optimal health.

Here’s a taste of our experience and what I hope to bring to you this weekend at the Love Your Body Day Yoga festival @ Reston Town Center inNorthern Virginia.  Sunday 10-5pm

We described the weekend in 3 words:
Accessible + Versatile + Customizable = Transformational
Three good qualities for your yoga practice, both on and off the mat.

There truly is a yoga practice for everyone. Whether you were a returning veteran with PTSD or a retired Cirque de Soleil flyer looking to rehab your body, a hiker, a water enthusiast, mother, daughter, father or son, you could find yourself a class that was both accessible and challenging. We even heard Joel Salatin speak on sustainable food and “kitchen chickens” of which I want two!

SUP Yoga Yogaqua
Three things that I will be bringing from Wanderlust to Reston this weekend and sharing in my booth:
  1. A new anti-aging skin care company that blends Ayurveda with molecular science with ingredients so clean and pure you can eat. Come hear and see for yourself.  Complementary to Bausc on my website.
  2. A beautiful custom designed yoga mat (minus common toxic ingredients)
  3. A custom designed mala with healing gemstones and amethyst pendant to use for meditation and to balance your energy.

I will also have a booth this weekend with The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders where you can:
  1. Learn about our Integrative Wellness Program that includes nutrition, coaching, yoga and meditation and
  2. Discuss the 5 R’s of functional medicine in the Speakeasy tent in a panel on Yoga and the Gut.
  3. Participate in yoga dance and a 30 minute talk on the Seven Steps to Optimal Health.

I’m bringing some of my Wellness Inspired Network with me in the form of a developing Directory. I will have my book and my usual sample of chocolate and strawberries and turmeric tea. You can sign up to receive my second book which is currently in editing and layout.

We have so many choices each day regarding what we eat, think and the actions we take.

Come learn something new, make some new connections and have some fun. Yoga is an inside job, only you can do the work, but it can be decadently delicious inside and out!

Carpe Diem,

Lisa
