Freedom from Superwoman

The Superwoman Complex. I talk about this in my intro to the Kick-Start program and my Seven Steps to Optimal Health.

A manicurist told me 20 years ago, “Lisa you have the biggest case of Superwoman than anyone I’ve ever met.”  This was from a business owner/manicurist who has seen and worked with a lot of woman. She was more like a therapist than a manicurist and she stunned me.

I see so many possibilities, I see so much that I want to do and I try and do it all and be all to all people. What happens when you’re giving, giving, giving without the equal balance of receiving? You lose yourself. You lose connection with self and the people you love, and want to connect with.

Another wise woman said to me years ago, “Lisa you can have it all, you just can’t have it all at the same time.”  That really made me mad, what did she mean? I had this deep down belief that life is short and I only have so much time on this earth, so I want to live every moment of it.  When I was doing business development and sales there was a “work hard and play harder” mentality. Growing up in Washington DC with the overachievers, the message was, “no pain, no gain”.  Somehow we had to be self-sacrificing to get to where we want to go and that somehow it has to be hard or it’s not worth it.  It’s been drilled in us for so many years.  Where is the ease and grace in this?

Deepak Chopra, MD says that the fastest way to a heart attack is to think, “There’s never enough time.”  This has been my mantra for years! Ugh, if I only had enough time, I would do this or that!  If I had a break or extra time and just whittled it away by doing something like watching a bad movie, or nothing, I would beat myself up and ask why didn’t I get all of these other things done that I had on my plate?

The real question is why do we fill ourselves with so many things “to do”? Could this be a diversion? Could this be a roadblock or self-sabotage?  To avoid digging deep into what is it that you really really want?

I started my Introduction to Kick-Start asking this question, for whenever you decide on a kick-start program whether it is now or the spring, summer or fall, ask yourself, “How do you really really want to feel? Because when you can answer that question, you can really begin to create the vision for real transformational change.  This takes some time and commitment to self to create the space and time that you need, just for YOU, to get there.  Not doing for everybody else, but just being there for you and allowing yourself to take that long deep inhale and hold it, and then an even longer exhale, so you can begin to feel the (timeless) spaces.

Often it is the transition time, the space between the events that allow you to fully feel, breathe and find the freedom that we are all looking for. Freedom from fear, freedom just to be; to get so grounded that it doesn’t matter what’s going on around us so that we can feel whole and joyful.  This feeling transcends with the right energy into everything else that you do, from your relationships with your family to your community, but it has to start with you first.  What self-care will you commit to to free yourself from the Superwoman complex today?

Love Heals January 9, 2016 & 2nd Webinar

Tonight, @ 7pm, I will offer a second webinar on “Introduction to Kick-Start to Wellness.” Due to my own user error, the Thursday evening webinar did not record properly to offer you a replay that many have asked for.  My apology as my head and my heart were with my daughter knowing that her labor was going to be induced Friday morning.  If you are interested in participating, please send me an email to ljackson@carpediemwellness.org and I will send you the login information for tonight's call.

But first, I want to share with you my own personal motivation, pictures of my new Grandson, proud Daughter and Son-in-Law!

Love heals and the gift of childbirth is the ultimate expression of love. The joy and hope felt is so nourishing and motivating for me to be the best I can be for him, as well as myself, so I can be a witness to his life as long as I am able to.  I am also reminded of my own personal challenge to practice my own self-love.

The challenge for me is to create a daily ritual and practice loving myself as much as I love my children and now my first-born grandchild.  Many mothers can attest to the indescribable pride and love that is felt in our hearts when we first meet our newborn child.  A heart in love is physiologically different than a heart that is filled with fear, pain or anger.  Different chemicals are emitted to the body creating either ease or dis-ease. All things are possible with love, even miraculous healing as Bernie Siegel, MD writes about in the Art of Healing.

This is why a daily practice of self-love and self-care is so vital to health and healing. For many of us, this can be challenging. This could be because we are conditioned in our society to be self-sacrificing, or maybe we’ve never been taught, or maybe this is just a practice we want to cultivate. Part of my advanced teacher training for yoga therapy requires that I create my own Sadhana or self-care ritual so that I can walk the walk and I am personally looking for community support and accountability to share in this journey.

If any of this speaks to you then please join me at 7pm tonight to learn more about my goal to support myself and you for the next 3 weeks while we tackle our own Kick-Start program and resolutions for the New Year. This will include personal assessment and 30 minute 1:1 call with me, self-health tools, recipes, online webinars and group support. This call is my gift to you.

Carpe Diem & Namaste,

Lisa

Why Kick-Start?

Join me tonight @ 8pm via a private webinar to explore more. Click here to register: http://app.webinarjam.net/register/8808/3c4db55f8e

The answer to this question, "Why Kick-Start?" is, "Whatever you are needing it to be. It may be a real need or desire to purify the body after holiday excess sugar or alcohol. If you are living in a northern hemisphere in the winter then this is a time for reflection, hibernation and warm grounding foods like soups and root vegetables. (My roasted root vegetable soup is so yummy and nourishing.) This Kick-Start is about feeling good and gaining a deeper connection with self, discovering and practicing tools to increase your confidence in your own ability to heal from within.  It is not about diet or deprivation but about finding the tools to determine what is right for you."

We are bombarded with marketing and medical myths that keep us stuck in a rut.

Ask me health related questions and share your challenges or roadblocks to optimal health to begin to co-create your own self health care plan. We will address the most common obstacles through education and community support. This program is available to my current clients and provides a guidebook and framework to begin your own transformational growth. My practice is currently full so I am offering this as an opportunity for those who are ready and wanting more education and support.  If you've joined me before, be my guest to jump on board, if you are like me you relish the power of community for much needed motivation.

If you are like me, you may know what to do but need some reminders and nudging to develop a personal practice.

My goal and passion is to inspire wellness and I am inspired by you. Please join me tonight and click here to register.

PS
I will not be offering this tomorrow at noon as previously planned, register for tonight's call and if you are unable to attend you can still listen to the replay.

Are you Ready?

Are you Ready?

This New Year’s Eve, I asked the family to write a wish or intention for our soon to be newest family member, the first awaiting grandchild for our family.

Here’s what I wrote for my Grandson:

“I wish that you always love your beautiful perfect body. I wish that you treat your body like your temple. That you learn and practice self care and self love so well that you become a light and a beacon to all those around you.  I wish that you utilize this strong positive life force to create positive change in the world. “ (May the force be with you!)

Then I realized how hard this is for me to follow through.  With so much negativity in the world and so many distractions, how do we prioritize self-care and give ourselves the gift of self-love?

We practice.

Everyday.

And we commit…to ourselves and to someone else…Out Loud. We find an accountability buddy and we accept personal responsibility for where we are at this moment in a very loving way.

I want to do something very different this year.

For me.

Why? Because my life depends on it.  I want to prioritize self-care and self-love.

This is my gift to me, to my family, and my community.

I am going to take my Kick Start Program and create a new program called Conscious Care.

If you are not 100% happy with who you are today and where you are in your health goals then I invite you to join me.

Together, we will take what I’ve created the last few years so you can co-create your own custom care plan.

I will share with you everything that I know, my Kick Start Workbook and Recipes and my Cultivating Joy program, all in one, and more.

All I ask for you is that you be present. That you show up once a week for an online support group and that you share. Give me your questions and concerns. Talk about your challenges and roadblocks and share your successes.  If you cannot make the call, no worries, email me your questions, share your progress, and listen to the recording.

Do you want to prevent cancer? Do you want to heal and repair? Then I invite you to join our community.

This takes courage and compassion. Together, we can create the change that we want to see in ourselves.

This sign sits on my desk:

What is different about this program this year?

This is about conscious cooking and conscious self-care. This is about nourishment and self-love. Discovering what is yummy and rejuvenating. This is not about dieting or deprivation. When we are in tune with nature, which I believe is key to living with ease and grace, honor that now is the time our bodies want to either hibernate or go south for the winter.  If you live in DC or Detroit or anywhere north, this is a natural time for more rest, repair and relaxation. We will offer you a process to determine the right nutrition for you at this time.

Every year we all have the best intentions:

The two most common obstacles or roadblocks that most of us face are:
  1. We don’t know what we don’t know. (So many myths driven by marketing!)
  2. We know what to do but need help or support staying on track. (I call this the Superwoman and Superman complex)

After all, we were not meant to be on this earth alone. If we could have done this by ourselves, we would have done it already!

So what will we focus on? Three Simple Steps:

The body will naturally heal from within if we do these things consistently. Consistency is the challenge and this is where creating community for inspiration is so important. I am offering to teach that which I need to learn and practice myself, the art of self-love and self care. I am asking for your support and feedback as I share what I know with you and for you to share with me your goals, challenges and success. I have simplified recipes and offering more for those who have participated in the past and want additional support. Click HERE to sign up for our Kick Off meeting next Thursday evening at 8pm and/or Friday at 12noon.
